A Group of Three Early Islamic Metal Vessels
Iran, 10th - 12th century and later

A group of three early Islamic metal vessels, including a bronze cauldron, a phiale (libation) bowl, and a tinned copper bowl, Iran, 10th - 12th century and later, comprising a cauldron of deep hemispherical shape, standing on three pointy feet and with a flattened rim with four flanges, each flange engraved with knotwork and animal motifs, such as lions chasing gazelles, set on a background of vegetal tendrils, further bands of knotwork and vegetal motifs to the rim, the inner diam 39.5cm, 49.2cm at widest point; a phiale bowl with a flat base rising to a flared edge, the inside with a central raised boss and an engraved central six-pointed star infilled with floral motifs and crosshatching, 21cm diam.; and a tinned copper bowl of cylindrical shape with a flat base and straight sides, engraved with four bands of geometric motifs and a band of inter-linked rosettes, 19.6cm diam.
