AN INDIAN SILVER REPOUSSÉ PLATE WITH A HUNTING SCENE
Pune, Maharashtra, India, ca. 1870 - 1890

Of shallow circular shape, resting on a heavily embossed base, with a short curved cavetto and wide, everted, crenelated rim, the centre embossed with a circular medallion featuring a typical Indian hunting scene on elephants' back, a tiger or lion attacking one of the hunting parties, its companion lying belly up in the foreground, surrounded by a band of vegetal scrolls, the rim a tour de force of repoussé work featuring several scenes of hunting and wild animals' chasing with riders on the back of horses, camels and elephants, each figural scene encased within palms and elements of local vegetation, 36cm diam., 1004gr.
