A CHINESE JUN PURPLE-SPLASHED FOLIATE BOWL

19th-20th Century

十九至二十世紀 鈞窯紫斑花口盌

The robustly potted dish of shallow form with foliate rim, rising from a shallow, slightly tapered foot, decorated all over except to the foot and lower part of the exterior body in a blueish-glaze splashed with vibrant purple splashes, thinning to pale mushroom to the edges of the barbed rim.

PROVENANCE:

From the collection of Robert Edwards (1883-1979) and his wife Gloria (1886-1960), Robert arrived in Shanghai in 1910, to work for Jardine, Matheson & Co. He married Gloria Byrne in 1917 and it was Gloria who took a special interest in acquiring Chinese antiques. The couple stayed in China until 1938/39. Several pieces in the collection have been exhibited at The Art Gallery Exhibition, Asian Art from the collection of Robert Edwards, State University College, New Paltz, New York, 1965;

羅伯特·愛德華茲(Robert Edwards, 1883-1979)與其妻格洛麗亞(Gloria, 1886-1960)收藏。羅伯特於1910年抵達上海,為怡和洋行工作。他於1917年與格洛麗亞·伯恩(Gloria Byrne)結婚,格洛麗亞對收購中國古董有著濃厚的興趣。夫妻二人於中國生活至1938/39年。收藏中的多件作品曾於1965年在紐約新帕爾茲州立大學舉辦的「羅伯特·愛德華茲藏亞洲藝術展」中展出;
