A FINE AND RARE LATE 18TH CENTURY SATINWOOD BRACKET CLOCK BY THOMAS WRIGHT, 'WATCHMAKER TO THE KING'

George III period, of unusually large proportions, the arched, triple pad top case surmounted by a brass ring handle, the arch inlaid with a marquetry conch shell above fan motifs and kingwood banding, the door flanked by reeded columns which are fluted and counter fluted with brass and topped with brass capitals, on a plinth base with brass claw and ball feet, the sides glazed, the white enamelled dial with Roman numerals, the double fusee movement with engraved and signed backplate, with verge escapement striking the hours on a bell, with pendulum, two case keys and winding key,

46cm high x 33cm wide

This clock is in working order and recently serviced.

Thomas Wright, 6 Poultry, London was admitted to the Clockmakers Company in 1770 as ‘Maker to the King’ signed on a bracket clock. He was a Quaker and a leading watchmaker. In 1783 he patented (N°: 1354) a form of detent escapement and compensation balance.
