Autograph Album.- Artists and Illustrators

Autograph album featuring letters and notes by various early 20th century artists and illustrators, addressed to either Mr John M. Swan or members of his family, including: Luke Fildes (autograph note offering "my congratulations on the honour the Aberdeen University has conferred on you", 11 Melboury Road, 28 September 1906); Frederick Leighton (autograph note saying "I delight in your young tiger and shall value it very much", 2 Holland Park Road, 26 April n.y.); Lawrence Alma-Tadema (autograph note saying "A severe cold prevents my rushing but to come and tell you how awfully fine that panel is", 34 Grove End Road, 6 June 1909); Edmund Dulac (autograph letter to 'Miss Agathonike', reading "Of course I remember the little fat elephant and I think it is most charming of you and extremely kind of Miss Swan to thus conspire in making me such a delightful present", 72 Ladbroke Road, 28 March 1915); Briton Riviere (note thanking Miss Swan for lending him her greyhound, Fraxley, 82 Finchley Road, 15 December 1910); Frank Dicksee (two autograph letters to Mrs Swan, one thanking her "for your very kind congratulations on my selection to the Presidency of the R.A. Of course I deem this a great honour", Greville House, 3 Greville Place, 20 January 1925; the other saying "I have waited until I could place your very kind offer before the Council. I have just had the opportunity of doing so. I have hardly to tell you they are delighted to accept this valuable gift and I am asked to tend you our warmest thanks", Greville House, 3 Greville Place, 10 May 1926); William Lionel Wyllie (note to Miss Swan, thanking her for "sending me the copy of Cape St. Vincent" and adding "I am afraid the roll is not long enough to make a panorama, but when the weather is warmer we will drive around and look at it. We might make it into pictures", Tower House, Portsmouth, 24 March 1931) and a few others, some letters pasted onto album pages whilst others are loosely inserted, red faux-leather, spine defective, wear to extremities, 4to; together with: a printed invitation to view some works by Walter Crane at the Fine Art Society, invitation to view a collection of William Strang's etched works; a vellum binding with metal insert by Victor Prouve and other loose prints (small quantity)
