THE DUKE OF YORK'S NAVAL TOUR, 1898

THE DUKE OF YORK'S NAVAL TOUR, 1898

An album charting the Naval Tour of HRH George V, when the Duke of York, while he commanded the HMS Crescent in 1898. The Royal Museums Greenwich notes that, "In 1898 HMS Crescent was employed on particular service, cruising and exercising around Ireland and Scotland. In July she joined the Channel Squadron at Kirkwall. She was then detached to act as a guard ship for Cowes week; she then returned to Portsmouth when the Duke of York came ashore –the end of his active service afloat."

The present album contains (50) matte and glossy silver gelatin prints, images sizes 150 x 200 (smallest) to 185 x 235 (largest), affixed to card recto and verso, with handwritten manuscript titles in lower margin, housed in a half calf album with pebble cloth boards (upper cover detached), with handwritten label reading 'Duke of York's Naval Tour, 1898' affixed to upper cover. All but one of the images contained within are also held by the Royal Collection Trust, which has attributed the images taken of the Royal Family aboard the Crescent, as well as the images of the crew and the Crescent' interiors, to Chief Petty Officer Thomas M McGregor (1862-1920?)
