AN 18TH CENTURY FRENCH RED JAPANNED LACQUER AND GILT BOX

AN 18TH CENTURY FRENCH RED JAPANNED LACQUER AND GILT WOODEN CASKET, with gilt arabesque borders and scenes of Venus and Cupid surrounded by chinoiserie style foliage and flying birds, the lid with a scene of Venus surrounded by putti and female attendants in her toilette, the sides with scenes of cupid and putti attending to Venus's carriage, resting, forcing arrows and loosing arrows at targets, the base and interior black japanned with gilt flecking, the four corners of the lid with monograms crowned in a seven pearls coronets of a Viscomte or Comte, with gilt brass hinges and lock chased with a scrolling foliate design, 24.5cm long

This probably part of a toilet service or 'nécessaire de toilette' for keeping brushes and other luxury items on a dressing table in an elegantly furnished boudoir.
