λ TWO CARVED MOTHER-OF-PEARL SNUFFBOXES WITH SILVER MOUNTS
Jerusalem, Holy Land, late 19th - early 20th century
Comprising a rectangular lidded box with several carved and engraved mother-of-pearl plaques, the lid decorated with a pair of birds facing each other and flanking a central vase spraying rosette and lush vegetal trellis, possibly a metaphor of the Tree of Life, on the border the Ottoman insignia of the Star and Crescent, the base carved with a bouquet of roses and Western-inspired volutes on the sides, 10.5cm x 6cm x 3cm; and a small rounded engraved silver snuffbox, the lid decorated with an openwork mother-of-pearl plaque with the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem, 3.5cm x 4cm.
