A GATHERING OF SIX SUFI MASTERS

Possibly Ajmer, Rajasthan, North-Western India, early 19th century

Opaque pigments and ink heightened with little gold on thin and brittle wove paper, the vertical composition depicting a gathering of six Sufi masters, namely Khwaja Mu'in al-Din Chishti, Ghaus al-A'zam, Khwaja Qutb al-Din, Shaykh Mihr, Shah Sharaf Bu 'Ali Qalandar and Sultan-ul-Mashaikh (Musa Shaikh), five clad in white robes and wearing a turban, the sixth painted in a dark green robe without a turban looking away from the rest of the group, each master accompanied by an identifying Arabic inscription in black ink nasta'liq script, set within black rules, and yellow and bright red borders, 25.8cm x 20.2cm.
