λ AN ENGRAVED AND TINTED MOTHER-OF-PEARL MOSAIC PANEL WITH ICONS OF CHRIST PANTOCRATOR AND THE MOTHER AND CHILD
Jerusalem, Holy Land, possibly 17th - 18th century

Of rectangular shape, made of several small mother-of-pearl mosaic tesserae, each one engraved and filled in black pigment, the panel divided into two halves, the upper part with Christ Pantocrator surrounded by his Twelve Apostles and three winged cherubs on each side, the lower part with a central roundel filled with the icon of the Virgin Mary and her child, flanked by two crowned courtly figures, the scene set within a frame enhanced with stylised foliage, scrolling vegetal trellis, flower roundels and winged angels, the primitive composition and naive draughtsmanship inspired by earlier Byzantine models, 25.5cm x 25.3cm.
