Nepal, late 19th - early 20th century
Opaque pigments and ink heightened with gold on wove paper, comprising a group of ten oval paintings featuring both Hindu and Buddhist deities including Vishnu, Varahi (the female version of Vishnu's Boar avatara), Dakshina Kali, Lakshmi, the River Goddess Godavari, and four more, each accompanied by a gold ink Devanagari inscription identifying the subject, most of them showing snowy mountainous backgrounds typical of the Himalayan surroundings, set within light green rules and dark purple borders, grouped in a grey paper folder marked in Swedish Malerier Af Nepalesiske Helligdomme no. 5 - 14 and accompanied by a hand-written note on the Pancha Vali worship and the town of Pharping, south of Kathmandu, where the Goddess Dakini Kali lives, each approx. 34.8cm x 25.3cm.
