A FINE CHINESE BLUE AND WHITE 'FIGURATIVE' BEAKER VASE, GU
Qing Dynasty, Kangxi Period
清康熙 青花人物故事圖紋花觚
Skilfully potted with a convex central section decorated to one side with a carp leaping out from tumultuous waves, the reverse with a qilin in a rocky landscape, supported by a splayed lower section painted with a scholar and his attendants, the upper flared section with another figurative scene depicting robed officials and seated dignitaries on a terrace amidst swirling clouds, the base with an artemisia leaf enclosed with a double-circle

PROVENANCE:
Formerly in the collection of Dr. Arthur Kauffmann (1887-1983), a German-British art dealer who worked for (and later owned) the Frankfurt branch of the auctioneers Hugo Helbing, and later was an art dealer in London. Kauffmann was a member of the British Antique Dealers' Association and the Oriental Ceramic Society;
Formerly in the collection of Professor C. M. Kauffmann (1931-2023), Keeper of Prints, Drawings and Paintings at the Victoria and Albert Museum, and subsequently Director of the Courtauld Institute of Art;
Thence by descent.
