A George III sterling silver sauce tureen, London 1791 by John Wakelin & William Taylor (reg. 25 Sep 1776)

Of navette form with reeded rim and moulded twin handles, raised upon an oval pedestal foot with stepped edge and reeded border. The conforming lid with gently domed centre surmounted by an urn finial, also cut with a ladle aperture. The body engraved with an impaled coat of arms within a shield cartouche, also with a crest of a lion’s gamb hold a key, chained. The lid engraved with the same crest. Fully marked underneath and part-marked to lid flange, also with scratch weight 18=13 and a numeral 3, the lid also with a numeral 3.

The arms are for Pownall with a label of difference for a first son, impaling Knatchbull
