A CHINESE EMBROIDERED BLUE-GROUND SILK LADY'S ROBE.

Circa early 1900s.

With a central opening, embroidered with colourful blossoms and butterflies on a dark navy blue ground, with borders of embroidered blue and blossoms, with pale blue cuffs, 127.8cm, 111cm.

Provenance: from the collection of Donald Beith (1878 – 1948), acquired in China in the early 1900s for his wife Florence Beith (1877 – 1966), thence by descent to the present owners via Janet Beith, the novelist and author of No Second Spring (1933) and Sand Castle (1936) who is reported to have worn the robe on weddings and special occasions between the 1970s and 1990s.
