A CHINESE EMBROIDERED RED-GROUND SILK 'DRAGON AND PHOENIX' JACKET.

Early 1900s.

Fastened to the side with gilt buttons, worked with three beasts to the front panel, five to the back and a phoenix at each shoulder, the mythical animals pursuing the sacred pearl of wisdom among clouds, fire wisps and auspicious symbols in the sky above stylised sea with crashing waves, 97cm, 170cm.

Provenance: from the collection of Donald Beith (1878 – 1948), acquired in China in the early 1900s for his wife Florence Beith (1877 – 1966), thence by descent to the present owners via Janet Beith, the novelist and author of No Second Spring (1933) and Sand Castle (1936) who is reported to have worn the robe on weddings and special occasions between the 1970s and 1990s.
