Niki de Saint Phalle is known for creating overtly feminist works. The Nanas are brightly coloured sculptures of women, were voluptuous, goddess-like creatures. The Nanas first appeared in 1964 and took inspiration from Saint Phalle’s pregnant friend. They act as emblems of maternity and femininity. Saint Phalle was always appalled by oppression; particularly sexism and racism. She radically changed the way in which women were depicted, from sad, melancholic and passive characters, to cheerful, energetic and powerful figures.
