A CHINESE EMBROIDERED SILK ROBE.
Late Qing Dynasty.
The heavy garment is sewn from turquoise silk with a red outer border, embroidered to the back in gilt and silk threads with two dragons flanking a pavilion surrounded by clouds and auspicious objects and ruyi-bordered roundels enclosing the Eight Immortals, the red border with dragons, cranes, trigrams and decorative borders, all embellished with a collar worked with lion dogs, figures and butterflies, 192cm across, 120cm long.
Provenance: from a private English collection acquired in China in 1920-30s.
