A FINE ZAND-STYLE OPENWORK BRASS VASE
Qajar Iran, 19th century
Gourd-shaped, the flared bulbous body resting on a cylindrical stand on a stepped hemispherical base, the full vase pierced with fine openwork decorations consisting of interlocking vegetal scrolls, flower heads and foliage, at the base and top of the main body calligraphic cartouches interspersed with roundels of pairs of birds and scrolling split palmette trellis, the centre of the body, stand and foot decorated with larger roundels and cusped cartouches engraved with both animal and figural characters in garden, hunting and banqueting scenes, all against a floral ground, 23.5cm diam. and 35cm high.
