AN ILLUSTRATION FROM A DEVI MAHATMYA SERIES: DURGA FIGHTING A GROUP OF DEMONS

Opaque pigments heightened with gold and silver on paper, the horizontal composition depicting a scene from the Devi Mahatmya featuring the multi-armed Hindu Goddess Durga attacking and vanquishing an army of evil asuras (demons) with her military arsenal, the tiger assisting Durga in her quest and attacking two more demons in the foreground, the scene set within dark blue borders painted with abstract white rosette roundels and red rules on pink ground, mounted, glazed and framed in Vienna, 26.3cm x 29.5cm including the frame.

This Devi Mahatmya illustration was once part of a set of three, belonging to a private collector. The other two illustrations in the series were successfully sold in these Rooms, 22 April 2020, lot 259.
