THREE ISLAMIC POTTERY TILES
PROPERTY FROM THE COLLECTION OF SIR ROY STRONG (B.1935), BRITISH ART HISTORIAN AND FORMER DIRECTOR OF THE NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY
Pakistan and Syria, Ottoman Provinces, 18th century and later

Comprising three underglaze-painted tiles, including a Pakistani Multan tile of square shape, painted with cobalt blue and turquoise on a white-slip ground, the decoration consisting of a typical geometric pattern stemming from a central rosette framed within a six-pointed star, 15.1cm x 15.1cm; an Ottoman Damascus tile also of square shape, featuring a central rose with a cobalt blue centre encircled by cusped green bands, leaves, and a circle of rosettes, all framed by a ring of rosette stems, each stem inside a cobalt blue saz leaf, further rosette stems to the corner of the tile, all on a white ground, the back plain, 15.3cm x 15.4cm; and an Ottoman Iznik-style border tile of rectangular shape, painted in green and cobalt blue on a white ground, the decoration consisting of a scrolling stem with flourishing carnations and saz leaves, set against cobalt blue and within green borders, 13.6cm x 11.1cm.
