A DEVOTIONAL PAINTING OF SHRI NATH JI
Possibly Nathdwara, Rajasthan, North-Western India, late 19th - 20th century

Opaque pigments heightened with gold on burnished wove paper, the large vertical composition depicting the murti (icon) of Shri Nath Ji, a special form of young Krishna worshipped in the region of Nathdwara, shown with his left arm raised in the action of holding up Mount Govardhan, the right hand holding a blossomed lotus flower, his neck and chest covered with several strings of pearl necklaces and garlands reaching the floor, in the foreground four cows, the yellow background livened by floral bouquets and stems in a style reminiscent of Mughal album borders, set within green and white rules, and bright red borders, 38cm x 28cm.
