A CHINESE FAMILLE ROSE 'LOTUS SCROLL' VASE.

Qing Dynasty.

With a rounded body rising from a waisted foot to a trumpet neck, decorated to the body with lotus flowers borne on scrolling foliage, above a band of lappets, the rim with a band of ruyi heads alternating with hanging chimes, above bats suspending peach fruits, the body with three quatrefoil panels enclosing scenes of scholars in exterior settings, details heightened in gilt, a six character iron-red Qianlong mark to the base, 18.3cm H.

Provenance: from the collection of Dame Marie Tempest (1864 – 1942), thence by descent to the present owner. One of the greatest sopranos and comic actresses of her day, Tempest visited China in the 1910s as part of an eight year international tour in 1914 which she took in Singapore, China, Japan and the Philippines.
