AN ELEGANT STANDING YOUTH OFFERING A WINE CUP
Safavid Iran, late 17th century

Pencil drawing with red highlights on paper, the soulful youth in a three-quarter pose, wearing a Central Asian dress, head cover, and platform shoes, his left hand extending a ringed little finger lifting the front of his robe, displaying flowing drapery, inscribed on the lower left in Persian nasta’liq script Ragham (drawn by) Abd Mohammad Zarif, laid on an album page with birds and beasts in a floral landscape in gold, set on a modern mount, framed and glazed, the drawing 16.5cm x 9cm, the album page 29cm x 18cm, 38cm x 27.5cm including the frame.

Provenance: Bonhams London, 11 June 2020, lot 32.

The backboard inscribed in French with further provenance information: Hotel Drouot, Paris, France, 13 May 1957, lot 50.
