AN EXCEPTIONALLY FINE THIRD QUARTER 19TH CENTURY CAMPAN AND ROUGE GRIOTTE MARBLE AND GILT BRONZE MOUNTED URN BY EUGENE CORNU, PARIS of squat form, the everted rim with ormolu egg and dart border, surmounted by a domed removable cover with fruiting finial above, mounted with a pair of handles finely cast as dragons in the Japonisme style, with a decorative mount featuring green man masks, signed 'E. CORNU Brd. des ITALIENS 24' raised on a lappet-cast spreading circular foot applied with vine leafs and a laurel wreath, over a square plinth with recessed corners,  56cm high x 38cm diameter This exhibition quality urn may have been included in Cornu's stand at the Exposition Universelle of 1867. An important pair of vases by Cornu of onyx, enamel and bronze were shown at Paris 1867,  and sold at Sothebys house sale at Westbrook House, Lot 29, September 19th 1995.   Related literature: Calalogue de la Exposition Universelle de 1862, Section francaise, London 1862; Masterpieces of Industrial Art and Sculpture, J.B.Waring, London 1862. Auction comparable: A larger pair of marble urns with turned bodies on circular feet adorned with vine leaves and a laurel wreath like the present lot were sold at Sotheby's, 15 May 1998, lot 100, for £30,000.
