A CHINESE ENAMELLED AND GILT-DECORATED FIGURE OF A BUDDHA.

Qing Dynasty.

Seated meditating peacefully on a double lotus base supported by two dragons, wearing colourful robes decorated with butterflies, cranes and various Buddhist symbols, the face and body later embellished with gilt, his face with a serene smile beneath tight curls lining his head, 29cm H.

Provenance: from the collection of Sheila Rosevear Urquhart (1908 – 1992), thence by descent to the present owner. The memoires are published as Sheila Unrquhart,2009, Sons of Heaven and document her time in China from her birth until she moved to Burma with her husband in 1932. They also include her own drawings based the Chinese art collection she amassed and are a touching portrait of an upbringing immersed in Chinese culture in the early 20th Century.
