He was taught by Alphonse-Victor Colas (1818-1887) in Lille and Alexandre Cabanel (1823-1889) at the Ecole des Beaux-arts in Paris. He was Grand Prix of Roma in 1875. He won a bronze medal at the Salon of Paris in 1875, an other reward in 1881, then an honor medal for the World Fair of Anvers in 1885. He was made chevalier de la légion d’honneur.
