A George III antique sterling silver soup tureen, London 1790, by William Pitts & Joseph Preedy Of oval form with gadrooned lower body and rim, with loop handles, raised on a spread-oval foot, the part gadrooned lid with an oval handle modelled as a branch, the underside of base engraved Nr 1, one side of the body and one side of the lid engraved with the crest of a cockerel and the motto compositum jus fasque animi, and the crest of a tower with the motto Nemo sine cruce, below a Baron’s coronet, the other side of the body engraved with a coat-of-arms within a garter ribbon, the other side of the lid engraved with a crest of a cockerel. Length – 44 cm/17.3 inches Weight – 3306 grams/106.3 ozt The arms are those of the Law family Barons of Ellenborough of Scotland, probably for Sir Edward Law, 1st Baron Ellenborough. The same model, same maker and date, sold for $8000 at Barneby’s in October 2017.
