Iran, late 19th - early 20th century

Of rectangular shape, folding in two equal halves, with a raised outer border, the exterior inlaid with coloured woods, bone and brass micro-mosaic (khatamkari) shaped in hexagonal medallions filled with stars and geometric patterns, larger roundels repeating the same motif in the centre of the board, the sides with oblong and cusped cartouches within bone and ivory-inlaid frames, the interior painted in bright red, with two smaller compartments for the white and red tokens and the dice, 39cm x 50cm when open, 19.5cm x 50cm when closed.
