The figures in the foreground of the present work are derived from van Bloemen's original, now in the Galleria Doria Pamphilj, Rome.

Jan Frans van Bloemen was born in Antwerp, but was mainly active in Rome where he went on to be considered as one of the most acknowledged landscapist during the early-18th century. He likely trained with his brother, Pieter van Bloeman, developing his skill for capturing classical landscapes with inspiration stemming from the Flemish landscape tradition.
