Western Zhou Dynasty, 11th Century BCE

西周 青銅鼎

Formed with a deep, rounded body and raised on three columnar supports, the exterior cast to the upper section with taotie mask designs punctuated with raised flanges, topped with a protruding rim surmounted by a pair of raised loop handles, one side incised with a twelve-character mark in archaic script

NOTE:

See a related ritual food fessel, dated as Late Shang / Western Zhou Dynasty, sold at Christie's New York, 19 Sep 2014, lot 986. See a smaller example, also bearing an inscription, offered at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 4 December 2024, lot 9395. A similar vessel of deep, rounded form, with a relatively sparse decoration save for the upper band of cast mask designs, was offered at Sotheby's New York, 23 March 2022, lot 238.
