The present work is a copy after the Deposition executed circa 1620-1630 by Jusepe de Ribera (Xativa 1591 - Naples 1652) in the Musée du Louvre, Paris.

Théodule Ribot executed several copies after the Old Masters, and Jusepe Ribera in particular. In 1868, when the Deposition was donated by Napoleon III to the Louvre, several copies were made by contemporary artists of the time. There is another copy, also on panel, attributed to Edouard Manet in the Museumslandschaft Hessen Kassel, Germany (Fig. 1).
