EUROPEAN LANDSCAPE INTEREST - PANORAMAS, late 19th century
A group of ten photographic and lithographic panoramas of various European locations, comprising: PANORAMA OF FREIBURG, c.1880. Albumen print panorama in four parts, backed onto a single piece of linen, overall measuring 161 x 672mm, signed and numbered in the negative ‘280 G Röbcke Photogr. Kunstverlag. Freiburg i/B’. View of Freiburg taken from the side of the valley. Röbcke operated a photographic studio and art dealership for a number of years in Freiburg from the Corner of Kaiser and Rempartstraße 2.
PANORAMA OF OLSO, late 19th centuyr. Albumen print panorama in five joined parts, mounted on period card in three joined parts, image overall measuring 190 x 1240mm, card measuring 325 x 1400 mm.
PANORAMA OF TOLEDO, by Jean Laurent (1816-1886), c.1865. Albumen prints (4), forming a four-part panorama, overall measuring 124 x 677mm, flush-mounted to original card, with extending flaps at each side, the photographer’s Paris-Madrid stamp verso.Toledo, located in central Spain, is famous as a cultural centre and for the manufacture of steel. The 16th-century Alcázar fortress and Gothic cathedral dominate the skyline.
PANORAMA OF GRINDELWALD, c.1900. Silver gelatin print panorama in three parts, measuring 195 x 752mm, flush-mounted onto boards printed with linen joints, captioned in the upper margin identifying key peaks and with negative numbers respectively 5667/5668/5669, label pasted down to board reading "Panorama von Grindelwald von A. Gabler, Photograph, Interlaken". A view from the Wetterhorn round to the Lauberhorn and including the Eiger. The Hotel Adler and Hotel Baren are also marked.
PANORAMA OF VERONA, c.1880. Albumen print panorama, mounted onto thin modern card backing, in two joined parts, measuring 195 x 524mm, titled 'Verona' and numbered 136 in the negative.
PANORAMA OF HAMBURG, 19th century. Strip etching panorama of Hamburg from the river, overall measuring 176 x 4890 mm, wound around mahogany roller, with a mahogany stay, with locations identified in the lower margin.
PANORAMA FROM THE SUMMIT OF SANTA LUCIA, SANTIAGO, c.1855. A rolled panorama depicting the summit of Santa Lucia, Santiago, drawn from camera sketches by E.R. Smith and published by T. Sinclair’s lith, Phila, c.1855. Tinted lithograph (with some hand-colouring) backed with linen, measuring 288 x 1772, titled and atttributed lower margin.
PANORAMA OF EASTBOURNE, 1864. Tinted lithograph by Newman & Co., 48 Watling St., London, published by A. Jinman, Stationer, Eastbourne, 1864. Lithograph presented in 2-parts, joined and backed with paper, measuring 245 x 1260 mm; titled and dedicated "This View is dedicated by permission to His Grace the Duke of Devonshire K.C. By His humble and obedient Servant, A. Jinman. June the 1st 1864" lower margin. The Duke of Devonshire, the dedicatee of this view, was the freeholder of much of the land on which Eastbourne was being built. The publisher, Jinman, describes himself in an advertisement in the Eastbourne Gazette, 13 Jan. 1864, as a 'Cabinet and Picture Frame Maker And Printseller'. On a later version of this panorama he describes himself as a house agent.

PANORAMA OF MARSTRAND ISLAND, c. 1880. Albumen print panorama, measuring 128 x 467mm, the left half mounted onto card, titled "Island of Marstrand near Gothenburg" in ink lower card margin recto. [so titled in ink ms. on the mount]. This panorama is a view of the port and island of Mastrand on the Bohuslän coast near Gothenburg. The island is dominated by the imposing Carlsten fortress, the construction of which was begun in 1658 under the orders of King Carl X Gustaf of Sweden. It would take 202 years to complete, but came to be considered one of Europe's strongest maritime defence facilities. The present print looks to be a single plate image from a much larger composite panoramic view, as there are faint join marks visible within the negative.
