PANORAMA OF MADRAS, c.1830
A 360-degree panorama of Chennai [formerly Madras], published at Cormandel Place, New Road, London, c.1830. Sepia aquataint print, measuring 145 x 990 mm, titled, attributed, and numbered with key references to locations lower margin.

Between 1830 and 1832, William Daniell exhibited a large, painted panorama of Madras at his rotunda in Coromandel Place, Euston Road, London; the present aquatint most likely served as the key to it, being presented to, or purchased by, Daniell’s visitors. On 25 May 1836 Daniell announced he was selling his Madras panorama, and also his panoramas of Lucknow and ‘Wild Elephants’.
A print of this panorama is held by the Rare Books and Manuscripts Department at the Yale Center for British Art, DS486.M2 M33 1832. They note that, "A panorama of Madras, by William Daniell and F.T. Parris, was exhibited in the temporary rotunda of Coromandel Place, London, from 1830 to 1832. The present print is presumably derived from the work of Daniell and Parris. That work was apparently based on sketches made by Augustus Earle, during Earle's travels in India in 1830. See: Pope, Charles. The merchant, ship-owner and ship-master's Import and Export Guide ... 1831, p. 859."
