York town mark – A very rare William IV sterling silver provincial teapot, marked York 1831 by James Barber, George Cattle II & William North (active 1823-1835), manufactured by Edward, Edward junior, John & William Barnard of London

Of compressed circular lobed ‘melonized’ form, raised on four anthemion and scroll bracket feet. The curved spout with lobbing opposite a reeded C scroll handle with matted leaf calyx junction, with ivory insulators. The domed hinged lid of lobed form surmounted by a cast detachable flower and leaf finial. The side with contemporaneous engraved initial H in flourished cursive script. Fully marked to side and part-marked to lid, the finial marked with Barnard makers mark and part-marks, the retaining nut with lion passant only.

Weight – 797 grams / 25.62 ozt

A York teapot of 1809 by Robert Cattle and James Barber bearing the town mark was sold in these rooms, June 26th 2019, lot 435 (£1,875 incl. premium)
