A POLYCHROME WOODS-VENEERED CHEST
Possibly North Africa or Syria, late 19th - first half 20th century
Of rectangular shape, resting on four lobed wooden feet, the exterior worked with micro-mosaic veneering of polychrome woods, the decoration consisting of stellar and geometric motifs, squares of starbursts and stylised arabesque roundels, fretwork bands to the outer borders, some tesserae imitating ivory-inlaid furniture pieces, the decoration an homage to Hispano-Moresque chests and Ottoman Syrian wall panels, the interior plain, 41cm x 77cm x 41cm.
