Opaque pigments and gold on paper, the vertical composition depicting two courtly ladies, possibly a princess and her maid, playing chess in front of a white marble pavilion, the pink-clad lady wearing an elaborate golden headdress caparisoned with pearl and embellished with a black heron feather aigrette, set within yellow rules and dark blue borders, mounted, glazed and framed, the painting 17.5cm x 12cm, 29.3cm x 23.5cm including the frame.
