The latter was built by Irineu Evangelista de Souza's company, Imperial Companhia de Navegação a Vapor - Estrada de Ferro Petrópolis. The original railway connected Port of Mauá, in the Bay of Guanabara, to Raiz da Serra. This railway was the first Brazilian railway and was inaugurated on 30 April 1854. Subsequently, the railway was expanded and opened to regular traffic in 1858. The railway connected in the first section of The Recife and São Francisco Railway Company, which had 31 km, Cinco Pontas and the vila do Cabo. This constituted the second railway in Brazil managed by an English company. The planned construction was only finished in 1862. In late 1889 there existed in Brazil 9.583 km of active railways, which served 14 of the 20 provinces.
