A PAIR OF INLAID AGATE AND ENGRAVED BRASS DAMASCUS-WARE CANDLESTICKS
Ottoman Syria, early 20th century

Comprising a pair of brass candlesticks, each of typical shape, with a circular silver-inlaid base with everted rim resting on bulbous engraved hardstone feet, the decoration consisting of floral roundels interspersed with thuluth calligraphic cartouches, the central stem made of brown agate segments inlaid in gold and enhanced with vegetal and floral motifs, the brass top decorated with Mamluk-inspired Y-shaped motifs, vegetal scrolls and stylised lotus buds, each 18.5cm high.
