TWO GREEK CHRISTIAN ICONS OF SAINT GEORGE
Mount Athos Region, Greece, late 19th - early 20th century
Comprising an icon of the saint carved in light wood and engraved in relief, depicting the saint on horseback slaying the dragon with his lance, a flying angel with a laurel wreath hovering above the knight, on the upper left corner an inscription in Greek characters reading AGHIOS GEORGIOS, 20.7cm x 14cm; and a small square polychrome-painted icon of the same subject, the halo of the saint made of white metal and pinned to the surface, 17cm x 13cm.
