From the Bill Rowlinson Collection, Photofusion, Brixton, London, UK.
Bill Rowlinson (1930-2008) was one of Britain's finest photographic printers, as well as a friend and mentor to many of his fellow professionals. He produced stunning prints for a veritable ‘who’s who’ of the photographic world, including Bill Brandt (1904-1983), Jon Swannell (b.1946), Sarah Moon (b.1941), and many others. Rowlinson enjoyed passing on his knowledge to those who desired to learn more about the techniques of photographic printing, and conducted a number of workshops at Photofusion, sharing the organisation's passion for photographic education and the providing of affordable, accessible resources. In the late 1990s, Rowlinson offered to donate his print collection and darkroom equipment to Photofusion with the hope that they could be of some benefit to future generations of aspiring photographers, and used as an asset to raise funds for future projects.
In 2024, Photofusion moved to a brand new premises in Brixton, to continue their invaluable work broadening opportunities in the photographic arts for all. This November, they are offering a selection of prints from Rowlinson's collection to the wider market, created while working with Moon in the 1980s, to raise funds to aid in the transition to their new premises.
