A SULEYMANIYE POLYCHROME-ENAMELLED AND GILT DISH COVER
Ottoman Turkey, 19th century
Of typical stepped hemispherical shape, the exterior painted in cobalt blue, green, light blue, pink, yellow and gold enamels, the decoration consisting of elongated cartouches of Westernised floral bouquets amidst a golden grid pattern, the interior in white enamel bordered by a straight gilt copper rim, the finial in the shape of a tombak pine cone, 14.5cm high and 21cm diam.
This cover would have once been part of a sahan (covered dish) and it is now missing its base. For a similar, though more ornate and complete example, please refer to Sotheby's London, 1 April 2009, lot 174.
