Here, the treatment of the figure of Christ, his posture and lowered head, relates closely to Sebastiano del Piombo’s influential oil mural of Christ at the Column in San Pietro in Montorio, Rome (1516-24). Among other works influenced by Sebastiano’s painting, Caravaggio’s c. 1607 treatment Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen (955.8) is notable, albeit with the head of Christ raised rather than lowered.
