The sitter, a bearded older man often in the guise of a monk or saint, occurs in several drawings by Savoldo in similar cropping and pose. See, for example: Getty Museum (89.GB.54), Musée du Louvre (INV 5524 & INV 5525), and Morgan Library & Museum (1981.91).
