GEORGE III (1760 - 1820), 1814 INDIAN PEACE MEDAL. BENJAMIN WEST/DE MARGARY FAMILY COLLECTION.

GEORGE III (1760 - 1820), 1814 INDIAN PEACE MEDAL. BENJAMIN WEST/MARGARY FAMILY COLLECTION.

Silver, 75.39 grams, 60.00 mm (second Size), Adams 13.1. (Obverse 1, Reverse A). Obv: Older, laureate and mantled bust of George III facing right. Rev: Helmeted and mantled royal arms with lion and unicorn supporters.

In recognition of the invaluable support provided by Indian Chiefs during the War of 1812-14, particularly at Fort Detroit, Chateauguay, and Chrystler's Farm, it was decided to award a medal to those leaders whose loyalty and cooperation were instrumental in securing decisive British victories over American forces.

This medal is from the estate of Aubyn de Margary and has been known to be in the family for over 150 years. It was likely in the collection of Benjamin West, a famous British-American artist and President of the Royal Academy of Arts, by descent from Harry Margary, the great-grandson of Maria West, the daughter of Raphael Lamar West and granddaughter of Benjamin West.

Benjamin West PRA (1738 - 1820), a British-American artist, is perhaps best known for his tenure as President of the Royal Academy of Arts from 1792 - 1805 and again from 1806 until he died in 1820 as well as being one of the most celebrated artists of the 18th - 19th centuries. His notable works include The Death of Nelson which hangs in the House of Lords and Benjamin Franklin Drawing Electricity from the Sky which hangs in the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Estimated at £3,000 - £4,000
