ABD-AR-RAHMAN JAMI'S (1414-1492) HAFT AWRANG: THE BOOK OF JOSEPH AND ZULAIKHA  PROPERTY FROM AN IMPORTANT EUROPEAN PRIVATE COLLECTION Iran, dated 1218 AH (1804) and signed Muhammd ibn Muhammad Rahim al-Shirazi Persian manuscript on paper, in black ink nasta'liq script, 149ff., plus three fly-leaves, each folio with 14ll., the opening bifolio sumptuously illuminated in burnished gold and polychromes with floral and geometric designs, the entirety of the text within gold clouds, chapter headings in red ink against burnished gold in illuminated cartouches, two folios with miniatures, the first one with Zulaikha and attendants on a balcony, observing Joseph's dispensation of justice regarding the criminals before him with their legs in stocks, the latter with Joseph riding with attendants and meeting Zulaikha as an aged hag, just before miraculously restoring her back to youth and beauty; three library stamps on the colophon including 'Abd ul-Hossein Hosseini', within gold and black inner and outer rulings, in lacquered binding, the inner front cover with Zulaikha's majlis, Joseph summoned in to bring a basin and ewer to Zulaikha as her companions swoon and tear their shirts and cut their hands with fruit knives in response to his overwhelming beauty; the inner rear cover with Joseph distributing the rationed grains to the public in the seven years of famine, observed by Zulaikha and companions on horseback, the outer bindings with the gul-o-bulbul motif, the flowers in varieties of stages of growth, the singing nightingale on the stem of the fully-open rose on sparkling red ground, 8.5cm x 4.5cm text panel, 10.5cm x 7cm the folio.
