PROPERTY FROM THE ESTATE OF LORD JOHN KERR ENGLISH SCHOOL (19TH CENTURY) Portrait of Francis, 7th Earl Cowper KG Oil on canvas, oval 61 x 51cm (24 x 20in) Provenance:  Francis, 7th Earl Cowper, KG Lady Amabel Kerr (daughter of the above) Thence by descent  Francis, was the 7th and last Earl Cowper (1834-1905), the eldest son of the 6th Earl and his wife Anne de Grey. Educated at Harrow School and Oxford, he entered the House of Lords on the death of his father in 1856.  He served under Gladstone as Government Chief Whip in the Lords from 1871-74 and as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland from 1880-1882. He was created Knight of the Garter in 1865. His sister, Lady Amabel, married Lord Walter Kerr (1839-1927) the younger son of the 7th Marquess of Lothian, who became Admiral of the Fleet. Lord Walter Kerr was Lord John Kerr's grandfather.
