Alexandre Bida studied with Eugène Delacroix. Early on he visited Syria and Constantinople; later he travelled more widely through Egypt, Greece, Turkey and the Crimea. He exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon, showing mostly drawings, for which he was highly praised. The present work is very probably a design for a book illustration.
