A POLYCHROME-ENAMELLED KASHMIRI COPPER DRAGON EWER
Kashmir, Northern India, 19th century

Of large pyriform shape, resting on a convex circular foot, rising to a tall tapering neck with a bulging ring in the middle, surmounted by a conical lid with bud-like finial, the lid hinged to a sinuous handle with dragon terminal, the tall curved spout ending in a similar dragon terminal, the exterior decorated with a mixture of engraved and repoussé techniques enhancing the volume and design of the ewer, the body with a band of circular polychrome-enamelled floral medallions encased within two bands of petal-shaped panels engraved with vegetal sprays, enamelled rosette scrolls and foliage decorating the neck and chevron bands with flower tendrils on the spout, all painted in cobalt blue, turquoise, pink, green and yellow enamels, 45.5cm high.
