Cornelius Jonson or Cornelius Jonson van Ceulen (and other variants) was born to a family originally from Cologne, who left Antwerp for London around 1568. The artist developed success as a portraitist for the English aristocracy. As evident in the present example, he was particularly detailed in his depiction of intricate materials and clothing. His style was thought to be influenced by the work of Flemish portraitist Daniel Mytens the Elder (Dutch, c. 1590 – 1648 or before), and Sir Anthony van Dyck (Flemish, 1599-1641). After leaving England in later life, Jonson continued to paint in the Netherlands where he joined the Saint Luke’s Guild in Middelburg. After spending some time in Amsterdam he settled in Utrecht, where he lived until his death.
