This lot is subject to CITES. William Payne is first recorded at 62 South Moulton Street London in 1816. By 1825 he has moved to 163 New Bond Street where the company remained until the 20th century. By 1852 Payne was signing his clocks 'William Payne & Company', and so presumably the present clock was assembled before 1852 Payne was known for his Boulle style mantel clocks, combining English fusee movements of very fine quality with highly decorative French 'Boulle' style tortoiseshell cases. Many of the cases he used date to the mid 19th century and were presumably made and imported to London specifically to house his movements; however the current case dates to the mid to late 18th century and is of unusually large size. Perhaps Payne sourced this wonderful case in order to house his more accurate, fusee movement. The dial plate has some old holes which imply that the case once housed a different, non-fusee (presumably French) movement, however the dial fits the winding squares of the present movement and may well have been made by Payne at the same time as the movement to fit this special case.
